With Russia and freedom of the press a constant presence in today’s news, we look back at how music has been used to frame nationalism both in response to and in spite of Russian censorship. This concert marks the first-ever PSNJ performance of Shostakovich’s monumental Fifth Symphony.

We celebrate Earth Day with a trip to outer space. Strauss’s introduction to Also sprach Zarathustra was made even more famous in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Custer’s arrangement of all the Star Trek movie and TV themes will make you feel like you’re sitting next to Leonard Nimoy. The program closes with an enormous orchestra for Holst’s ever-popular “The Planets.”
